Description

This position is responsible for the day to day support and long term architectural and technical infrastructure planning necessary to support the needs of the NREC Computing environment. The Administrator works with project leaders in order to ensure their required services are maintained and supported, and has responsibility for the Linux and Network related work performed by the NREC Computing group. Will provide technical leadership for planning, scoping and reviewing the enterprise, server and workstation components of the NREC Linux and Network infrastructure. Provide technical assistance and mentoring to a common goal of investigating and resolving issues cooperatively. At this level, individual has demonstrated creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving complex problems, determining and organizing program objectives, requirements and long term strategies for a diverse user community. Candidates for this position should have advanced knowledge of administration tasks in Linux, Unix and Network environments, basic knowledge of administration tasks in Windows environments, and excellent user interaction skills. The position is responsible for providing user and facility support, network configuration, Windows, Linux and Unix server maintenance, operating system and hardware setup and upgrades; real-time diagnosis, debugging, and repair of computer hardware and software problems; maintaining departmental servers, performing system backups, training users, etc. This position is also responsible for mentoring other system administrators in relevant skills. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Implement the overall vision established by the NREC Computing Manager.
  • Maintain and support new and existing NREC Computing services.
  • Work with project leaders to analyze their project needs and determine appropriate services for their project(s).
  • Propose an implementation and deployment strategy for new services.
  • Propose new projects for the Computing group.
  • Process tickets from the rec-help ticketing system, ensuring a timely and satisfactory resolution for each ticket.
  • Identify own training needs and work with the NREC Computing Manager to see that these needs are met.
  • Lead the implementation and deployment of new Linux and Network services according to the NREC Computing schedule.
  • Provide input to the NREC Computing Manager on the Computing group's policies and procedures.
  • Implement the policies and procedures set forth by the NREC Computing Manager.
  • Support Computing audits on an as-needed basis.
  • Track NREC Computing windows assets and licenses.
  • Provide a weekly status report to the NREC Computing Manager.

Qualifications

Minimum
  • Education: Bachelor's in electronics or computer technology or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Four or more years demonstrated Systems Administration experience under Windows and Unix. Four or more years of PC software and hardware system analysis on a professional level. Includes system design and upgrade; specification and configuration; maintenance, diagnosis and troubleshooting of Linux platforms including detailed understanding of internals. Knowledge of specific protocols (e.g., SMB/CIFS, NFS, RPC). Knowledge and applied experience with networking/client-server technologies and network topologies (TCP/IP). Experience with common Linux infrastructure components (e.g., DNS, LDAP, samba, sendmail, apapche). In depth knowledge and experience with systems security management including group policy objects. Extensive knowledge of common Linux vulnerabilities and remediation (e.g., attempted intrusion detection, patches). Experience with and knowledge of large scale storage and backup strategies and technologies. Experience in Linux programming (C, C#, C++, Java, shell scripting) a plus.
  • Skills: Self directed individual with excellent leadership and facilitation skills. Possess excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work with and provide technical assistance and mentoring to colleagues. System software diagnostics and hardware installation/repair. Advanced systems and network administration tasks in Linux and Unix environments. Ability to communicate with users verbally and through electronic means. Ability to organize work in order to meet deadlines. Strong knowledge of electronics and computer systems to aid in repair. Demonstrated experience in applying good, solid software and systems design methodologies as well as evangelizing its philosophy. Experience developing, testing, integrating and deploying robust computing services within a large and diverse user community. Ability to comprehend system and application related materials; design, maintain and document applications; communicate with systems users, especially in remote locales using telephone and email; understand and follow directions. Good documentation skills a must.
  • Physical Mobility: Ability to sit for extended periods of time; Able to travel to various campus locations to install equipment or software, able to lift and carry desktop computers and related peripherals. Able to maneuver in tight spaces, to bend, reach, stoop, etc.
  • Environmental Conditions: Close contact with CRT for prolonged periods.
  • Mental: Ability to: (1) work under pressure; (2) pay attention to detail; (3) meet inflexible deadlines; 4) deal with difficult individuals while maintaining composure.
  • Other: May be required to be on-call or carry a beeper to provide support during evenings and weekends; Evening and weekend work may be required to meet deadlines and/or perform maintenance during off-peak hours.
Preferred
  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering; equivalent combination of education or experience in directly relevant disciplines and/or Microsoft and vendor certifications.
  • Experience: Six or more years of PC software and hardware system analysis experience on a professional level in a heterogeneous computing environment comprising Windows, various Unix implementations and Real Time Operating Systems. Supervisory experience. Experienced with the deployment and administration of email services.
  • Skills: Excellent oral and written communications skills. Excellent problem-solving skills. Technical documentation. HTML markup and editing. Programming (C, C++). Ability to work independently and with a minimum or supervision. Ability to understand the computing needs of a large diverse community in order to make appropriate decisions regarding the policies and requirements to ensure its security. Ability to program using Perl, shell scripts.
  • Mental: Ability to work well in group situations. Ability to prioritize tasks in an unstructured environment.
